Sammlung und Archivbestände

Sammlung und Archiv des Museums Neukölln sind in erster Linie Informationsquellen – Information über das Leben in Rixdorf/Neukölln, gegenwärtig, vergangen oder gar vorvergangen, früh- bzw. vorgeschichtlich.
Diese Information kann materieller, geistiger, wissenschaftlicher und gemütsbezogener Art sein, sie ist in ihrer ganzen Komplexität von Bedeutung – die Bewahrung und Erschließung dieser Fundgrube des Wissens für kommende Generationen ist oberstes Ziel und rechtfertigt die dafür eingesetzten öffentlichen Gelder.

So vielschichtig, wie sich die Siedlungsgeschichte des Ortes in den Schichten des Bodens anhand bedeutender archäologischer Funde erhalten hat, so vielschichtig ist sie auch an der Oberfläche. Ausgespannt zwischen der Großstadt Berlin und der Kreisstadt Treptow/ Köpenick war das Terrain Rixdorf/Neukölln stets einer ganz eigenen, phasenweise geradezu experimentellen Überlebensstrategie verpflichtet, begründet einerseits in der Saumzonenrolle einer „Schlafstadt“ (billigere Mieten) im Verhältnis zu Berlin und der Bevölkerungsexplosion gegenüber dem Landkreis Teltow andererseits. Diese problematische, aber auch fruchtbare Herausforderung hat spätestens um die Jahrhundertwende zu kommunalpolitischen Lösungen geführt, die Rixdorf/Neukölln lange vor dem Reformeifer der 20er Jahre zu einem sozialpolitischen, in vieler Hinsicht äußerst fortschrittlichen, wenn nicht gar avantgardistischen Versuchsfeld machten.

The Collection as information source

The Collection and Archive of the Neukölln Museum are primarily sources of information – information about life in Rixdorf/Neukölln, in the present, in the past, or even in the ancient past, early or prehistoric times.

This information can be of a material, intellectual, scientific or emotional nature, it is of significance in its total complexity – the conservation and cataloguing of this treasure trove of knowledge for future generations is our foremost aim, and justifies the public money invested for the purpose.
So multilayered, as the settlement history of the place has been preserved in the layers of the ground with their important archaeological finds, so multilayered is it on the surface, too. Stretching between the city of Berlin and the town of Treptow/ Köpenick (the seat of district government) the terrain of Rixdorf/Neukölln was always engaged in a survival strategy all of its own, in phases downright experimental, based on the one hand on its marginal role as a `dormitory town´ (cheaper rents) in relationship to Berlin , and on the other hand the population explosion in comparison to the town of Teltow, where the district was adminisrated. By the turn of the 19th.Century at the latest, this problematical, but also productive challenge had led to solutions in municipal politics, which made Rixdorf/Neukölln into an area of sociopolitical experiment that was extremely progressive, if not downright avantgarde, long before the reforming zeal of the Twenties.
